You’re Invited to Kate’s Open Studio
As part of Arts Canterbury Open Studios, you’re invited to step inside Kate McLeod’s home-studio and garden in Ilam, open for two weekends only, November 1–2 and 8–9, from 10 am to 4 pm.
This is a rare chance to explore where Kate’s bold, abstract paintings come to life. Normally it’s just her, a few unruly tools, and the occasional pīwakawaka — but during Open Studios, the doors (and garden gate) are wide open for you to wander in and see where the magic happens.
Inside, you’ll find new works created with oil, acrylic, resin, pigments, and even a touch of metal leaf. Every piece is handcrafted, right down to the timber frames that Kate builds herself.
During your visit, you can:
Wander through Kate’s creative studio and lush Ilam garden
Discover how her large, physical paintings are made
Enter the draw to win an original artwork
Browse finished pieces available for sale
Talk to her about process, tools, techniques, gardening, colour theory, or football.
Explore a fresh collection of resin jewellery made from painting offcuts, available exclusively during Open Studios
Fall in love with a work and take it home the same day
Kate loves meeting visitors, chatting about her process, and sharing her slice of Ōtautahi’s creative life.
When: 10 am – 4 pm, November 1–2 & 8–9
Where: Ryeland Avenue, Ilam, Christchurch (signs will lead the way)
